A bit of history

Theories about hypnotherapy have been developed over the years and ideas about the ‘power’ and ‘control’ of the hypnotherapist have often scared people away from receiving much needed brief therapy.

One of the modern schools of thought about hypnotherapy has been developed by a gentleman named Milton Erickson (1901- 1980); you will hear of Ericksonian Hypnotherapy time and time again.

Erickson believed in the value of the relationship between the therapist and the client as being a major catalyst for therapeutic change. He also respected the individual’s ability to heel themselves and knew that everyone has the answers within to find the solution to any of their problems.

Modern day hypnotherapists work hard to dispel myths about ‘control’ and ‘power’. You will find that you remain in control at all times and that you will do nothing against your own will. Most practices are modern and bright, and believe it or, they don’t all have the stereotypical couch!

Many people think that in order for therapy to be effective you have to achieve a certain state of relaxation. Thanks to Erickson, many therapists can use their initial consultation to begin the right ‘mind set’. this includes explaining what might occur and allowing for any questions or misapprehensions to be addressed.

Every day we manage to hypnotise ourselves. Ever felt yourself ‘day dreaming’ or wondering around in a ‘trance’? Have you driven from A-B and not been able to recall the journey? Allowing yourself to ‘drift’?
